And That Never Ending Question –
What & Where is
Lake Donna was on Cross Street where the Children’s Ark Daycare is now
located, below the current US Post Office. From the 1950’s to the 1960’s it wa a recreational swimming area operated by Harry & Lucille Privette and was
named after their daughter Donna – hence the name Lake Donna. There was
a large pool for the adults and a smaller pool for the children. The pools were
man-made with cinderblock sides, sandy bottoms and fed by a natural
spring on the property connected to a piping system.
Behind the swimming area was the building that served as a clubhouse
that still stands today being used as for the daycare center. The first floor
was a changing area while the second floor of the clubhouse featured a
jukebox and sometimes a band for dancing.
During the summer local teens from all over flocked here to dance and party
during the summer. But, alas, as all good things go when the Privettes sold th property the swimming pools were filled in and the building was converted to
a dressmaking shop. But if you talk to anyone who was a teenager here durin at that time you can see the dreamy look in their eyes when they talk about Lak Lake Donna memories, it you go to the site you can still see the large
grassy area where the pools were, and if you close your eyes and listen
really close you may be able to hear the laughter!
But then again you can come to the Lake Donna party the third Saturday
in May from 6pm-10pm at Luddy Park - 200 US1-A South
Bring your lawn chair, sit out under the stars, listen to the free
beach music, eat good food, talk to your neighbors, and make your own
memories!
